Tamil Nadu is the southernmost state of Indian peninsula sharing boundaries with Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The population density of Tamil Nadu is 555 people/sq. kilometers which is higher than the national population density rate. According to the census of 2011, the population growth of Tamil Nadu is 15.6 % which was around 11.7% in the year 2001.The overall population growth of India is 17.7%. As far as religion wise population growth rate in Tamil Nadu is concerned, the growth rate of both Hindus and Muslims is less than the national growth rate (16% for Hindus and 24.5% for Muslims).
The Kancheepuram region records a very high population growth rate in last decade due to land costs. Population in this area is increased by 39% according to the last census.
