Tamil Nadu is the southernmost state of Indian peninsula sharing boundaries with Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.  This state lies in the east of Cardamom Hills and bounded by the Eastern Ghats and the Indian Ocean. Tamil Nadu also shares a very small border with Sri Lanka. There are various famous tourists’ destinations in the state of Tamil Nadu like Ooty, Chennai, Mahabalipuram etc.  The capital city of Tamil Nadu is Chennai. It is one of the most literate states of India having a literacy rate of over 80%. Not just literacy, Tamil Nadu is also the home for various Indian classical dances and music.

Tamil Nadu is seventh most populous state of India having a population of 72,147,030 people according to the census of 2011. The 48.4% of total population of the state lives in urban areas.

Population Density and Growth of Tamil Nadu

The population density of Tamil Nadu is 555 people/sq. kilometers which is higher than the national population density rate.  According to the census of 2011, the population growth of Tamil Nadu is 15.6 % which was around 11.7% in the year 2001.The overall population growth of India is 17.7%. As far as religion wise population growth rate in Tamil Nadu is concerned, the growth rate of both Hindus and Muslims is less than the national growth rate (16% for Hindus and 24.5% for Muslims).

The Kancheepuram region records a very high population growth rate in last decade due to land costs. Population in this area is increased by 39% according to the last census.

  • The transport system of Tamil Nadu is very good. The state is well connected by the medium of roadways, railways, and airways. There is an International airport in Chennai and several other air terminals in cities like Salem, Tiruchirapally etc.
  • Pongal, Thirunaal, Deepavali, Eid-ul-Fitr, Good Friday etc. are the main festivals of Tamil Nadu.
  • The majority of state’s population follows Hinduism (88.3%) whereas; Christianity and Islam are in minority.
  • Chennai is the biggest city and capital of Tamil Nadu, it was formerly known as Madras.
  • Area wise, Tamil Nadu is the 11th largest state in India.
